Our Last Three Ontario Shows! - July 10, 2008

Is it true? Are we really on tour? Pinch me now! I woke up next to Caroline and Sue this morning, and am giddy with delight that we're in Sault Ste. Marie tonight. We just descended on Loplops and the place is gorgeous and the owners fantastic. Sue and Caro are setting up for the gig, and I'm trolling the internet to say hello to my mom and sisters! (I sent my dad snail mail, because he doesn't "do" the internet.)

I missed my bike today when I saw couples trekking Highway 17 by bike. Next summer, I'll include my bicycle on the tour, for sure. Haven't figured out how yet, but I'll make it happen!

Details on our last Ontario shows are below!

Tonight - Thurs. July 10 Sault Ste. Marie - Loplops Lounge - 651 Queen St. E
Fri July 11 - Thunder Bay - The Apollo - 239 Red River Road
Sat July 12 - Kenora - Lake of the Woods - 132 Matheson Street South

Thanks for your continued support. North Bay rocked last night and the food and serving staff were probably some of the nicest I've ever met!

Friday the 13th Is Tomorrow - June 12, 2008

And it's not that I'm superstitious so much as I like that other people ARE, and therefore the date carries with it, some sort of mysterious weight with it.

Tomorrow is my last day of work with the Ministry and it finally hit today.

Onward ho, until October.

Did I Tell You About the Time...? - April 15, 2008

We played by candlelight for a packed art gallery in Colborne?

Or did I tell you about the interviews the Good Lovelies have been doing with OCAD student/ videographer Jenni Hames?

Did we ever tell you about the time we saw a burned out truck on Highway 401 on the way to Ottawa?

Have we mentioned the time that we opened for the Arrogant Worms and met one of the world's most energetic audiences?

Have we mentioned that we're about to embark on the coolest photo shoot to date, this coming Sunday?

Did I mention that we're playing a killer show at Hugh's Room on June 18th?

Have we mentioned that recording for the album is KICKING ass? And that all the players who have joined us are wowing the pants off of us AND our producers?

Have we told you about our producers? These two incredibly talented (and insane) musical minds?

There is so much to tell.

So much..

Keep checking in for updates!

Around the 29-minute mark is a short clip of Kerri, Caroline and Sue -- hyperactive and a wee bit intoxicated after our performance during Canadian Music Week -- discussing our music, our oddity and songs about inappropriate love affairs with the lovely Indie-Can host, Joe Chisholm.

Please don’t tell my mom I was drinking...

Lights Out Show - March 28, 2008

The Good Lovelies are heading to Colborne Ontario this Saturday night, March 29th, to the stunning Colborne Art Gallery to play a full two-set show by candlelight.

This show is a must-see as the girls will be singing live off the floor for two hours.

Prepare to be soothed, amused and bathed in the glorious sound of three-part harmony.

The Good Lovelies aim to please and would like to meet you. So, remember to bring something for them to sign (or even better, purchase a brand spankin' new copy of their EP) and ask them to sign it.

My guess is, they'll sign whatever you put in front of them.

Good Lovelies Head Home - March 7, 2008

In the news today...

Good Lovelies Coming Home
Port Hope Evening Guide
Byline: Shelby Parker

They're bringing their talent for beautiful melodies and comedic banter to their hometowns.

Kerri Ough of Port Hope, Sue Passmore of Cobourg and Caroline Brooks of Whitby perform Saturday as the Good Lovelies at the Roots Down musical revival at the Park Playhouse in downtown Cobourg.

"We've been called the female Barenaked Ladies, which is OK, cause I love them," Ms. Ough, a singer, guitarist, banjo and bassist, said with a laugh.

She said they have also been called the modern Andrews Sisters and a peppy version of the Be Good Tanyas, a Vancouver folk group.

The group has existed since December 2006, when they threw themselves together for a Christmas concert in Toronto.

Ms. Ough and Ms. Passmore grew up together, attended Cobourg East High School and were in La Jeunesse choir together. Ms. Passmore met Ms. Brooks in Toronto, and all three brought their musical talents to the group.

"Then we just kept auditioning for shows together," Ms. Ough said.

After only a few months, they released an extended play CD called called Oh My! which is a short collection of songs they've done. It has sold more than 1, 000 copies so far, and in June they will release their first full length CD and gear up for a western Canada tour.

"Whenever we sit down with a new song, we know who's gonna sing which part, and where we want to go with it, which is challenging but exciting," Ms. Ough said.

Even the group members are unsure of their genre, they describe it as an upbeat version of peppy folk, with pop influence.

"Every time we get to the drawing table it changes," Ms. Ough said with a laugh. "I don't know if it's deliberate, but it's been successful."

The Good Lovelies played at the Ottawa Folk Festival and the Toronto Independent Music Awards ceremony. They have also won One-Fret Less award and were named Best Folk Group by the independent music awards.

Saturday's show begins at 7 p.m.

"I love that we're playing there," said Ms. Ough, who has seen the Playhouse be so many things.

"Every time we go back, there a huge group of supporters. That's nice," she said.

But it isn't their first time back.

They appeared at last summer's Shelter Valley Festival and various local venues, including a fundraiser at St. Mary's school in Cobourg in January.

Good Lovelies in the News - February 27, 2008

Check out our PRESS page.

The Brock Press interviewed The Good Lovelies about their upcoming appearance during Canadian Music Week at the Savannah Room, next Thursday night at 10pm.

Don't miss out on an exciting weekend of music. There is something for everyone.

Rocking the House... Concert - February 22, 2008

Saturday night we headed to the Barrie-Innisfil-Alcona region for our first official house concert. Our hosts Ginny and Patty were preparing for a party, and we were preparing for an awesome night out of town.

What we weren't prepared for was the palatial basement with which we were about to be greeted. I have heard for years that house concerts are held in living rooms for an audience of 20-40 people - with little to no sound equipment. The idea is an intimate concert in a music lover's home to showcase an artist, help them make a buck and where everyone feels cozy.

Our "house concert" though still technically in someone's house - was in a basement that is bigger than the last bar we played in Toronto... (See blog for images.)

What a stunning room. Chairs and couches were laid out for guests to enjoy. Desserts and bowls of chips were set out at "stations" around the vast subterranean room. Above the stage area were newly-installed pot lights for the performers (us!) and behind us was the PA to which we owe a great deal. Luckily, we were convinced that bringing mics and mic stands would be a good idea, and I don't regret the rental.

The audience was hilarious, giant and responsive. They laughed, they heckled, they drank and they clapped and tapped. I even heard some singing. In proper Good Lovelies' fashion we promised free signings with each purchase of our EP, and happily obliged concert-goers after the show.

Lucky for me (and Caro and Sue) our fiance drove that night. Forgetful me had left a lovely bottle of red wine at home, and proceeded to harass Ginny for a bottle. She graciously parted with a bottle of red, which was thoroughly enjoyed in mugs, by all three Lovelies. There was wine, dance moves, revealing stories about what kind of underwear we all wear (or don't wear - if you know what I mean.)

And then it was midnight and we headed out. A big thank you to Barrie, our hosts Ginny, Patty and Clare and to Linda and Arnie, who started the ball rolling on this show last October.

With the last stand packed, and a clear sky above us we took off -- to the end of the road where we stopped for 3 giant slices of pizza. On the window of the pizza place was a poster of us for the show that had just passed. Caroline wanted to pose with it (she felt like a full-fledged rockstar) and sadly I was without my camera.

For now, I leave you with this photo. It was from this week's "rehearsal." I use the term loosely, because as you can see, rehearsal quickly turned into a work-clothes wrestling match.

I was the winner.

P.S. I borrowed the title of this post from a new friend and fan Carol T. She wrote on our GUESTBOOK. Check it out.

Home, Sweet Home - January 28, 2008

Each trip home trumps the last visit - and I don't know how that's even possible.

Not only did all of my available family members attend Friday's show but so did some great friends and my former choral conductor. In short, it was a memorable evening.

As an admitted lifelong-choir girl, this was a fundraiser I was particularly excited about. We were there to help an outstanding high school choir raise funds to send them to a competition in San Francisco. The evening opened with a sweet set by Aengus Finnan. Aengus sports a beautiful guitar, both in look and sound and he immediately commands your attention --but it's his lilting voice and words that hook you.

Soon after, the choir took to the stage, charming the audience with their perfect tuning and heartfelt songs. I must stress again, their impeccable tuning. A quartet of seventeen-year-old choristers stepped out to perform an a cappella number - and I, along with two other lifelong choristers were impressed with their blend and tuning.

After a mad dash down Highway 401, past the Cobourg Tim Horton's and after a quick visit to the St. Mary's washroom, the Good Lovelies took to the stage. Up front, sat my Pa, who knew full-well he had put himself in a prime spot to be targeted for Kerri-style stage banter. A few minutes later, I spotted my nine-year-old nephew happily upon Dad's lap, clapping along to our songs. We sent out a song-dedication to the group fiancé, Colin, who is arguably our number one supporter. Colin puts up with us stealing his wife-to-be five days a week, helps us carry gear around, fills in as Skinny-Santa and he puts up with our incessant-weirdo chatter on road trips out of town from the back seat, because we rarely let him drive. Sometimes I think we frighten him, but mostly, I think he's entertained. Actually, come to think of it, Caroline and I dedicated a song to Colin, and Sue dedicated it to a seeing-eye-dog at the back of the auditorium...

Caroline promised the audience "free-CD-signings" with the purchase of a very well-priced Good Lovelies album. And after the show, we were pleased as punch to write all over the CDs everyone bought from us. I haven't worked out a fixed "autograph" yet, so those of you sporting a "Kerri O" hearted autograph - hang on to it, it might be the only time THAT happens.

And what's a trip to Cobourg without a quick stop at the Cat and the Fiddle to have a drink and make merry with old friends? Sue's parents joined us for a beer at the pub, and though I was at the other end of the table, I heard them speaking with Sue about good ideas for a first date. That family is unlike any family I know.

Our crazy OCAD videographer-stalker, who has promised to never put incriminating video footage of us (or rather, me) on the internet, joined our trip eastward too. Jenni's lovely and kind and funny and over the last year she's become a good friend. But she's also filming our every move, and I should be more afraid of her... but I'm not. I guess we'll wait to see what comes of her Good Lovelies documentary.

Oh, How We Crave Ottawa - January 23, 2008

Even with temperatures dipping to a bone-cracking 27 below, Ottawa always manages to warm our toes and hearts.

Saturday night was our fourth visit to Ottawa - the first time being at Rasputin's Folk Cafe one chilly March afternoon last "spring," the second at "The Fourth Stage"; the third, being the Ottawa Folk Festival, and with our fourth show now finished - we excitedly anticipate our fifth, on March 22nd.

This past time, we piled into Dean Verger's intimate and cozy Rasputin's Cafe after scarfing down delicious hotel cheeseburgers, and much to our delight, I noticed candles and reserved signs on each of the tables.

Going into gigs, you never know what you're going to get, but here, we were already set up for an enjoyable and successful evening.

It's people like Dean, who so obviously cares about his musicians and his community and places like Rasputin's, dedicated to performers and real interaction, that remind me why I love making music and performing so much.

For a moment, near the end of the show, I took a moment on stage to take in my surroundings. Sue and Caroline let me do so, narrating as I sighed and teared up about how, "Sometimes, she just needs to do this."

Outside, the snow was howling and pedestrians wandered by with hoods tied tightly around their faces. Inside, sixty people took the time to come out and lend their ears and to share in our music over candlelit tables and tall glasses of ale.

With every roadtrip, show, hurdle and sleepover in a hotel room, things get better and better.

Oh, Ottawa, our love affair with you will never end. We'll see you in March, with the Arrogant Worms. How you woo us with your blue, icy skies, your marketplace of goodies, your kindness and nightlife.

We are so grateful. Thank you Dean Verger for a beautiful and memorable evening and to our audience, who makes it all worthwhile.

Back & Better Than Before - January 2, 2008

January has a nice ring to it. There should be more songs about January. There should be more words that rhyme with January. There should be a song about the 2nd day of January - the real beginning to the next year.

It's Wednesday and a new calendar now hangs on my wall at work. There is a photo of a healthy looking salad topped with delicious-looking croutons. The borders on the calendar page are green and are making me hungry for spinach.

The new year is already looking better than expected.

It is with great joy to tell you that the Good Lovelies and our right-hand woman, Yvonne, attended a luxurious day at Ste. Anne's spa on Sue's birthday. It began with Tim Horton's and a drive to the country. A quick tour of the spa had us giddy with excitement to shed our clothes and jump into the hot tub. From nine to six, we lounged around in our terrycloth robes, and moved from room to room, from tub to steam room, and from massage to facial rooms at a slow and easy pace.

That evening, we headed back to Sue's parents' home to a home-cooked meal and a relaxing evening of nothingness. Our combined relaxation from the spa, had us all falling asleep on the couch watching You and Me and Everyone We Know. On the 31st, we journeyed back to Toronto - home. Caroline had ahead of her, a day of Lasagne-ing, and prepping for a dinner-party. Sue had before her, a day of catching up on email, and browsing internet websites. I had ahead of me, another day to relax.

In store for us at Caroline's was a dinner to remember. The company of friends, some great food, and a game of scrabble was all I needed to ring in the new year. Many hugs and kisses later, the first party disbanded and a second party began across town. I scurried away, to yet another location where I was to ring in January 1st. Along with two of my favourite Toronto teachers, we watched the clock move past midnight, shared pleasantries, and carried on with our evening.

My phone rang and I made merry with friends and headed home. I can't explain to you what it feels like to be me, but I can assure you, a few great friends, a game, some love, and a good night of sleep keeps me content far longer than anything else.

Happy Everything. The year is already in full swing. To the next 12 months of change, excitement, busy-ness, and love.

From one Very Good Lovely

Port Hope the Wonderful - December 10, 2007

We made it home, Port Hope, and we have one hundred people to thank for an outstanding experience playing for the hometown crowd.

To Christine and Mike and the Journey Through The Arts team - what a gorgeous space. We hope for more collaborations in your artistic and inspiring gallery. Thank you.

To our moms and dads, Ted and Lynn; Wayne and Brenda; and Fred and Joy - how much fun it is to have all our parents in one room at the same time and have them take the *gentle* ribbing we dish out (with love.) Our parents, who come to our shows, bake refreshments for the audience, who put us up in their homes when we're in town. You are too kind and we have much to be thankful for.

To our sisters, brothers, friends, supporters, and encouragers. You make us want to sing more - harder - louder and longer. To our new friends and listeners - you make this possible!

Thank you Port Hope for your picturesque main street and your Ganaraska River.

Thanks to George Lee of George's Guitars for your many rentals and sound advice for the show.

Thanks to the pizza places that stay open late, dear friends John and Chrissy who joined our gathering after the show, for driving out to the country to see us.

And a hearty thank you to the Merry Men, Rob Szabo, Peter Katz and Scott Cooper who sing with us, and make us laugh and who are just as strange and delirious as we are after a show. And to their significant others for being so funny, supportive and creative. You add to the fun.

Thank you, Alicia for taking care of merchandise and for being one of our Top 10 Supporters of All Time. It means so much to us and especially to yer Big Sister.

Thanks to Santa, so fit and slim, holding his beard on tight, spilling ale in a stunning fountain in front of us, and for kissing our bandmate. Three cheers to Santa and the group fiance, Mr. Love.

I could go on, but I'm already feeling like this is getting a bit like an awards thank-you speech. Please visit the Good Lovelies blog later today for pictures and more words about the pre-show, the during-show, and the after-show adventures.

xOXo,
The Good Lovelies
Kerri, Caroline and Sue
